Geography
Mahendragarh district occupies the southernmost extent of Haryana, forming part of the broader semi-arid belt that transitions into the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. The terrain consists of plains interspersed with low hills associated with the northern fringes of the Aravalli Range. The district falls largely outside the perennial river network of Haryana, and groundwater along with seasonal drainage support agriculture. Rainfall is comparatively low, and the climate is marked by hot summers and cool winters.
Administration
The district is divided into several tehsils and sub-tehsils, with administrative subdivisions including Narnaul, Mahendragarh, Kanina, Ateli and Nangal Choudhary. The district administration is headed by a Deputy Commissioner, while law and order is supervised by a Superintendent of Police. For revenue and development purposes the district is further organised into community development blocks and panchayats.
History
The town of Mahendragarh, after which the district is named, was historically known as Kanaud. It was renamed in the 19th century in honour of Mahendra Singh, a member of the ruling family of the princely state of Patiala, which controlled the area before integration into independent India. After Indian independence and the reorganisation of states, the territory became part of the erstwhile state of Punjab. Following the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966, which created Haryana on 1 November 1966, Mahendragarh became one of the districts of the new state.
Narnaul, the present headquarters, has a longer recorded history and is associated with several monuments of the Sultanate and Mughal periods, including tombs and pavilions linked to figures of that era. The town is also remembered as the site of the Battle of Narnaul in 1857, fought during the Indian Rebellion against the East India Company.
Economy
The economy of the district is predominantly agrarian. Bajra (pearl millet), wheat, mustard and gram are among the principal crops, with cropping patterns shaped by limited rainfall and dependence on tube wells. Animal husbandry, particularly the rearing of cattle and buffaloes, supplements farming incomes. The district also contributes significantly to recruitment in the Indian Armed Forces, a long-standing tradition of the Ahirwal region.
Demographics and culture
The population is largely rural and Hindi-speaking, with Haryanvi as the dominant local dialect. The Ahirwal cultural identity is reflected in folk traditions, festivals and customs shared across southern Haryana and adjoining parts of Rajasthan.
Education
Mahendragarh district is home to the Central University of Haryana, established under the Central Universities Act, 2009, and located near Mahendragarh town. The district also has a network of government and private schools, colleges affiliated to state universities, and technical institutions.
Transport
The district is connected by state highways to Rewari, Gurugram, Delhi and parts of Rajasthan. Rail connectivity is provided through stations on the Rewari–Phulera line of the Indian Railways network, with Narnaul and Mahendragarh among the principal stops.
