Mizoram University, Aizawl

Overview

Mizoram University (MZU) is a central university located at Tanhril, on the outskirts of Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, India. It was established under the Mizoram University Act (No. 8 of 2000) passed by the Parliament of India and commenced operations on 2 July 2001. The university succeeded a campus of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), which had until then served as the principal institution for higher education in the state.

Background

Prior to the creation of Mizoram University, higher education in Mizoram was anchored by a campus of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), which functioned as the principal institution serving the state. With the enactment of the Mizoram University Act in 2000, the Parliament of India provided for a dedicated central university for Mizoram. The new university began functioning on 2 July 2001, taking over from the earlier NEHU campus and assuming the role of the leading institution of higher education in the state.

As a central university, MZU is governed in accordance with the provisions of its founding Act. The President of India serves as the official Visitor of the university, while the Governor of Mizoram holds the position of Chief Rector. The university is situated at Tanhril, on the outskirts of Aizawl.
