Geography
Muzaffarpur district is located in the alluvial plains of north Bihar. It is bounded broadly by East Champaran and Sheohar to the north, Sitamarhi and Darbhanga to the north-east, Samastipur to the south-east, Vaishali to the south, and Saran and Gopalganj to the west. The terrain is flat, fertile, and crossed by several rivers, making the district both highly productive agriculturally and prone to seasonal flooding.
History
The area now constituting Muzaffarpur district has historically been part of the wider Tirhut/Mithila region, with cultural and political links to the ancient Vajji confederacy and the city-state of Vaishali. Under British administration, Tirhut district was reorganised in 1875, and Muzaffarpur was constituted as a separate district. Subsequent reorganisations carved out further districts from its territory, including Sitamarhi and Vaishali.
The district town is associated with the events of 30 April 1908, when the revolutionaries Khudiram Bose and Prafulla Chaki attacked a carriage at Muzaffarpur in an attempt on the life of magistrate Douglas Kingsford, an episode that became significant in the history of the Indian independence movement.
Administration
The district is administered by a District Magistrate and is part of the Tirhut Division. For administrative purposes it is divided into sub-divisions and community development blocks, with the city of Muzaffarpur as the principal urban centre. The district sends representatives to the Lok Sabha through the Muzaffarpur parliamentary constituency and to the Bihar Legislative Assembly through several assembly constituencies.
Economy and agriculture
The economy is predominantly agrarian, with paddy, wheat, maize, sugarcane, pulses and oilseeds among the principal crops. Muzaffarpur is most famous for horticulture, particularly the Shahi litchi, whose orchards are concentrated in this belt; the variety has been registered as a Geographical Indication associated with the region. The district also has agro-processing units, small and medium industries, and trade activity centred on Muzaffarpur city, which is a road and rail junction of regional importance.
Transport
Muzaffarpur is a major junction on the East Central Railway, with connections to Patna, Delhi, Kolkata and other cities. National Highways linking north Bihar to Patna and to Nepal pass through the district, and the city is connected by road to surrounding district headquarters.
Education and institutions
The district hosts Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University, headquartered at Muzaffarpur, along with affiliated colleges across north Bihar. Other institutions in the district include the Muzaffarpur Institute of Technology (MIT), Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), and a number of higher secondary and professional colleges.
Culture
Culturally, Muzaffarpur is part of the Mithila and Bhojpuri-influenced cultural zone of north Bihar. Maithili, Bhojpuri and Hindi are widely spoken. The district observes the major festivals of the region, including Chhath, Holi, Durga Puja, Ramnavami and Eid. Local fairs and the litchi season are notable features of the district's calendar.
Public health
The district has periodically reported outbreaks of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES), particularly affecting children during the summer months, which has drawn significant public health attention and intervention by state and central authorities.
