Overview

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Postgraduate), commonly abbreviated as NEET PG, is an entrance examination in India used to determine the eligibility of candidates for admission to postgraduate medical programmes offered by government and private medical colleges. The examination is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). NEET PG replaced the earlier All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination (AIPGMEE) as the single qualifying test for postgraduate medical admissions in the country.

Through NEET PG, candidates may seek admission to a range of postgraduate qualifications, including the Doctor of Medicine (MD), Master of Surgery (MS), postgraduate diploma courses, the Diplomate of National Board (DNB), the Doctorate of National Board (DrNB), and NBEMS diploma programmes.

Role in admissions

NEET PG functions as the qualifying examination for admission to postgraduate medical courses across India. Candidates who appear in the test are considered for seats in MD, MS and postgraduate diploma programmes offered through medical colleges, as well as for DNB, DrNB and NBEMS diploma programmes administered under the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences. By consolidating eligibility under a single national test, NEET PG provides a common standard for postgraduate medical admissions in both government and private institutions.

Following the conduct of the examination, the counselling process and seat allotment are handled by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The DGHS oversees the allocation of seats to qualified candidates based on the results of the examination, in accordance with the categories and quotas applicable to postgraduate medical admissions.

Background

NEET PG was introduced as the successor to the All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination (AIPGMEE), which had earlier served as the central entrance test for postgraduate medical admissions in India. The transition to NEET PG brought postgraduate medical admissions under a unified eligibility framework conducted by the NBEMS, aligning the postgraduate-level admission process with the broader National Eligibility cum Entrance Test system used for medical education in the country.
