Background

NBSTC operates in the geographically distinct northern part of West Bengal, which comprises the districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur and Malda. The region includes Himalayan foothill zones, the Terai and Dooars belts, and plains along the Mahananda and Teesta rivers. Public road transport in this region serves a mix of urban centres, tea garden townships, forest areas and remote rural pockets, and connects with Sikkim, Bihar, Assam and Bangladesh border points.

Operations

The corporation runs intra-district, inter-district and inter-state bus services. Major originating and terminal points include Siliguri, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Malda, Balurghat and Raiganj. Inter-state services link North Bengal with destinations in Assam, Bihar and Sikkim, while cross-border bus services have at times connected Siliguri with locations in Bangladesh and Bhutan.

NBSTC operates a mix of ordinary, express and air-conditioned services, and over time has added Volvo and other premium long-distance buses on selected routes. The corporation also manages bus depots and terminals across northern West Bengal.

Administration

NBSTC functions under the Department of Transport, Government of West Bengal. It is administered by a Board of Directors, with day-to-day functioning led by a Managing Director. Operational matters such as scheduling, ticketing, depot management and fleet maintenance are handled through divisional and depot-level offices distributed across the region it serves.

Significance

As one of the principal state-run transport bodies in West Bengal, alongside the Calcutta State Transport Corporation, the South Bengal State Transport Corporation and the West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation, NBSTC plays an important role in providing affordable mobility in northern West Bengal. Its services are particularly significant for residents of areas with limited rail connectivity, including parts of the Dooars, hill subdivisions and border regions, and for connecting tourist circuits in Darjeeling, Kalimpong and the Dooars.
