OJEE

Overview

The Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE) is a state-government controlled centralised test used for admission to a range of private and governmental professional institutions in Odisha. It is conducted for entry to programmes including lateral entry in B.Tech, lateral entry in B.Arch, B.Pharm, BDS, MBA, MCA, PDCM, PGDM, M.Pharm and M.Tech, and is taken at various stages after Class 12, diploma, graduate or postgraduate qualifications, depending on the course applied for.

MBBS and first-year B.Tech admissions were removed from the scope of OJEE following the introduction of the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) and JEE (Main). With the announcement of an all-India common medical entrance examination (NEET), OJEE is presently conducted for engineering and allied programmes. Earlier, two separate tests were held for medical and engineering colleges, the medical paper including Biology while the engineering paper included Mathematics.

Role in admissions

OJEE serves as the common admission gateway for several professional courses across universities and colleges in Odisha. Candidates with a graduate or postgraduate qualification compete through OJEE for seats in MBA, MCA, PGCM, PGDM, M.Pharm and M.Tech programmes across various disciplines offered by universities in the state. For Class 12 candidates from a pure science background, the test assesses Physics, Chemistry and Biology, supporting admissions to programmes such as B.Pharm and BDS.

From the 2015 session onwards, students seeking admission to first-year B.Tech and B.Arch programmes in Odisha have been required to appear for JEE (Main), conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi. Consequently, the role of OJEE in undergraduate engineering admissions is limited to lateral entry, while medical admissions are routed through NEET. The examination continues to draw candidates from the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha, as well as from the CBSE and ISC boards, with approximately three lakh candidates appearing each year and the number reportedly increasing.
