Background

The institution traces its lineage to the University of the Punjab established at Lahore in 1882, which was the fourth university to be set up in British India after Calcutta, Bombay and Madras. Following the Partition of India in 1947, the original university remained in Pakistan, and a new university was reconstituted in India to serve the educational needs of the partitioned region of East Punjab. The reconstituted university initially functioned from temporary arrangements before being relocated to Chandigarh, the planned capital city designed by Le Corbusier.

Campus and organisation

The main campus of Panjab University spans Sectors 14 and 25 of Chandigarh and houses teaching departments, research centres, the central library, hostels, and administrative buildings. The university also operates regional centres and has a network of affiliated colleges spread across Chandigarh and several districts of Punjab. Academic activity is organised across faculties covering arts, sciences, languages, business management, education, engineering and technology, law, medical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, and design and fine arts.

Governance

The university is headed by a Vice-Chancellor, with the Vice-President of India serving as its Chancellor by convention. Statutory bodies such as the Senate, Syndicate, and Academic Council oversee policy, academic affairs, and administration. The university is funded jointly by the central government and through grants from associated state governments, alongside the University Grants Commission.

Significance

As a successor institution to one of British India's earliest universities, Panjab University holds a distinct place in the educational history of northern India. Its inter-state character, with academic ties extending across Chandigarh and Punjab, makes it administratively unique among Indian state universities. The campus itself is part of the modernist architectural ensemble of Chandigarh and contributes to the cultural and intellectual life of the city.
