Background and Early Life
Pankaj Tripathi was born in the village of Belsand in Gopalganj district of Bihar to a farming family. He spent his early years in the village before moving to Patna for higher studies, where he was associated with theatre groups and student politics during his college years at the University of Patna. His interest in acting led him to apply to the National School of Drama in New Delhi, from where he graduated in 2004.
Career
Early years (2004–2011)
After completing his training at NSD, Tripathi moved to Mumbai in 2004. He spent several years taking on minor roles in television serials and films, including a brief appearance in Run (2004) and a small role in Apaharan (2005). During this phase he supplemented his income through small acting assignments and continued theatre work.
Breakthrough (2012–2017)
His role as Sultan Qureshi in Anurag Kashyap's two-part film Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) brought him critical attention. He followed this with supporting roles in films such as Fukrey (2013), Masaan (2015), Nil Battey Sannata (2015), and Anaarkali of Aarah (2017). His performance as a presiding officer at a remote polling booth in Newton (2017), directed by Amit V. Masurkar, earned him the Special Mention at the 65th National Film Awards.

Tripathi achieved mass popularity through the role of Akhandanand Tripathi, also known as Kaleen Bhaiya, in the Amazon Prime Video series Mirzapur, which premiered in 2018. In 2022 he played the title role of Mahatma Gandhi's mentor in Gandhi Godse – Ek Yudh and headlined Kaagaz. He played the lead role in OMG 2 (2023), a courtroom drama on sex education directed by Amit Rai. He also appeared in Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga (2022) and reprised Madhav Mishra in subsequent seasons of Criminal Justice.

Tripathi is married to Mridula, a teacher; the couple have a daughter named Aashi. He has spoken publicly about his agrarian roots and continues to maintain ties with his ancestral village in Bihar.
