Geography

Perambalur district lies in the interior of Tamil Nadu, away from the coast. It is bordered by Salem and Tiruchirappalli districts among others, and shares a boundary with Ariyalur district, which was carved out of the older Perambalur district. The terrain is mostly plains with scattered hillocks, and the region falls within the dry agro-climatic zone of the state. Major streams of the area are seasonal, with cultivation depending heavily on monsoon rainfall and groundwater.

Administration

The district is administered by a District Collector, who functions under the Government of Tamil Nadu. For revenue administration the district is divided into taluks and revenue blocks, with Perambalur town serving as the principal urban centre. Other notable towns within the district include Kunnam and Veppanthattai.

History

The territory now constituting Perambalur district has historically been part of larger administrative units in the Chola heartland of central Tamil Nadu. In the modern era it formed a part of Tiruchirappalli district during the British period and after independence. Perambalur was constituted as a separate district by bifurcation from Tiruchirappalli district. Subsequently, Ariyalur was separated from Perambalur and made into an independent district, reducing Perambalur to its present extent.

Economy

The economy of the district is predominantly agricultural. Perambalur is widely recognised within Tamil Nadu as a major producer of small onions (shallots), along with paddy, maize, cotton, sugarcane, and pulses. The wider Perambalur–Ariyalur belt also has significant geological deposits of lignite and limestone, which support cement manufacturing and mining-linked activity in the region. Cottage industries and agro-processing units form part of the secondary sector.

Transport

Perambalur is located on National Highway 38 (the Chennai–Tiruchirappalli corridor, formerly NH 45), which links it to Chennai in the north and to Tiruchirappalli in the south. The town is served by road-based long-distance transport, while the nearest major railway junction and airport are at Tiruchirappalli.

Demographics and culture

The population of the district is predominantly Tamil-speaking, with Hindus forming the majority and significant Christian and Muslim minorities. The district contains several temples and historic sites associated with the Chola and later periods. Local festivals follow the Tamil cultural calendar, with temple car festivals and harvest celebrations such as Pongal observed widely.

Education

Perambalur hosts a number of arts and science colleges, polytechnic institutions, and engineering and medical colleges that draw students from surrounding districts. School education is administered through the Tamil Nadu state board system alongside private institutions.
