Overview

Pritam Chakraborty, known mononymously as Pritam, is an Indian music composer, instrumentalist, and singer associated primarily with Hindi cinema. Since the mid-2000s, he has been one of the most commercially successful composers in Bollywood, with a body of work spanning romantic ballads, club tracks, Sufi-inflected songs, and rock-influenced compositions. He is the founder of the production house and live music collective Jam8.

Background and Early Life

Pritam was born in Kolkata into a Bengali family. His father was a music teacher, and Pritam received early training in classical music and the guitar. He studied at Presidency College, Kolkata, before enrolling at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, where he specialised in audio engineering and sound recording. At FTII, he met composers and musicians who would later collaborate with him in the Mumbai film industry.

Career

Early Work and Advertising

Before entering films, Pritam composed extensively for advertising jingles in Mumbai during the late 1990s and early 2000s. He briefly worked with composer Jeet Ganguly as part of the duo Jeet–Pritam, scoring music for a few Hindi films in the early 2000s before going solo.

Breakthrough in Hindi Cinema

Pritam achieved wider recognition with the soundtrack of Dhoom (2004), and consolidated his position as a leading composer with films such as Gangster (2006), Life in a... Metro (2007), Jab We Met (2007), and Race (2008). His work in this period blended pop, rock, and electronic textures with conventional Bollywood melody.

Pritam has been a frequent collaborator of directors Imtiaz Ali, Rohit Shetty, Anurag Basu, and Ayan Mukerji, and producer Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. Notable soundtracks include:

Jam8

He frequently draws on Sufi qawwali traditions, Bengali folk, and Punjabi rhythms. He has worked with a wide range of lyricists, including Irshad Kamil, Amitabh Bhattacharya, and Sayeed Quadri, and singers such as Arijit Singh, Mohit Chauhan, K.K., Shilpa Rao, and Neeti Mohan.
