Overview
Rajanna Sircilla is a district in the northern part of the Indian state of Telangana. It was carved out as a separate administrative unit on 11 October 2016, when the Government of Telangana reorganised the existing districts of the state to bring administration closer to the people. The district takes its name from the temple town of Vemulawada, dedicated to Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy (popularly addressed as Rajanna), and from Sircilla, the district headquarters and a long-established centre of the powerloom textile industry.

Background
Before reorganisation, the area now constituting Rajanna Sircilla district was part of the larger Karimnagar district. As part of a wider exercise that increased the number of districts in Telangana from 10 to 31 (later expanded further), the state government created Rajanna Sircilla in 2016 along with several other new districts. The objective of the exercise was to enable more localised governance, faster delivery of welfare schemes, and decentralised revenue administration.
Geography
The district lies in the north-central plateau region of Telangana, bordered by the districts of Karimnagar, Siddipet, Jagtial, Kamareddy and Peddapalli. The terrain is largely undulating with cultivable plains, drained by tributaries of the Godavari. The Mid Manair Dam, built across the Manair river, lies in the district and is a major irrigation and drinking water source.
Administration
The district is administered by a Collector and District Magistrate appointed by the Government of Telangana. For administrative convenience it is divided into revenue divisions and mandals, with Sircilla and Vemulawada being the principal revenue divisions. Sircilla is also the seat of the district police, judicial and revenue offices.

Economy
Rajanna Sircilla is best known for its powerloom textile cluster centred on Sircilla town, which has historically supplied cotton sarees, polyester fabrics and uniform cloth to large parts of southern India. The cluster has been a recipient of state textile sector support, including bulk orders for school and welfare scheme uniforms. Beyond textiles, the district economy depends on agriculture, with paddy, maize, cotton and turmeric being among the principal crops, supported by irrigation from the Mid Manair Dam and associated canal networks.
Culture and pilgrimage
Vemulawada, often described as Dakshina Kasi, is one of the most visited Shaivite pilgrimage centres in Telangana. The Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy temple draws large numbers of devotees, particularly during Maha Shivaratri and the Kartika month. The temple's antiquity is associated with the Chalukya period, and the town remains an important religious and tourist hub for the district.
Transport
The district is connected by state highways to Karimnagar, Hyderabad, Nizamabad and Warangal. The nearest broad-gauge railway connectivity is via stations in adjoining districts, and the closest airport is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Hyderabad. Road-based public and private transport, including services of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation, link Sircilla and Vemulawada to other parts of the state.
Significance
The creation of Rajanna Sircilla district reflected the broader administrative restructuring undertaken after the formation of Telangana in 2014. By combining a major industrial town (Sircilla) with a major pilgrimage town (Vemulawada) within a single compact district, the reorganisation sought to align governance with both the economic and cultural identity of the region.
