He spent several years directing television commercials and editing films, gaining a reputation for tight, character-driven storytelling. He worked on the editing and promotional material for Vidhu Vinod Chopra's films, including 1942: A Love Story and Mission Kashmir, which led to a long-standing creative partnership with Chopra.
Directorial career

Hirani made his directorial debut with Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., starring Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani and Sunil Dutt. Significance
Hirani is regarded as a filmmaker who has bridged the gap between commercial Bollywood and socially engaged cinema. His films have repeatedly entered popular discourse in India, influencing conversations on education reform, religious tolerance and public attitudes towards stigma. The catchphrases and themes from his work, such as "Gandhigiri" and "All is well", have entered everyday usage in Indian popular culture.
