Geography

Raxaul is located in the northern part of East Champaran district, in the Gangetic plains of north Bihar. The town sits at the foothills of the Himalayan terai, and the small Sirsiya river system runs in its vicinity. Across the border lies Birgunj in the Parsa district of Nepal's Madhesh Province, with the two settlements forming a continuous urban area separated only by the international boundary.

Transport and connectivity

Raxaul is a key node in cross-border movement between India and Nepal.

  • Rail: Raxaul Junction railway station is operated by the East Central Railway zone of Indian Railways. It is the terminal station on the Indian side for routes towards Nepal and is connected by direct trains to cities such as Patna, Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and Lucknow. Historically a metre-gauge line ran from Raxaul into Nepal, which has since been redeveloped as a broad-gauge cross-border line connecting to Birgunj and the Inland Container Depot at Sirsiya.
  • Road: The town is connected by national and state highways to Motihari (the district headquarters) and onward to Muzaffarpur and Patna. The highway crossing into Birgunj continues as Nepal's main north–south corridor towards Kathmandu via the Tribhuvan Rajpath and the alternative Narayangadh route.
  • Border crossing: The Raxaul–Birgunj crossing is among the busiest India–Nepal land border points and handles a major share of bilateral trade, including petroleum products supplied to Nepal.
  • Air: The nearest airports are Simara in Nepal and the larger airports at Patna and Gorakhpur in India.

Economy and trade

The town's economy is closely tied to its position as a border entrepôt. Customs, freight forwarding, transport, warehousing and small-scale retail dominate local commercial activity. A significant volume of merchandise traffic, including goods imported by Nepal through Indian ports, passes through Raxaul. The Integrated Check Post and customs facilities support both passenger and cargo movement, and the cross-border petroleum pipeline from Motihari to Amlekhgunj operates through this corridor.

Administration

Raxaul is administered as a notified area / urban local body within East Champaran district. It also serves as the headquarters of the Raxaul community development block and is part of the Raxaul assembly constituency, which sends a representative to the Bihar Legislative Assembly. The town falls within the Paschim Champaran Lok Sabha constituency for elections to the Indian Parliament.

Demographics and society

The population is predominantly Hindi- and Bhojpuri-speaking, with Maithili also widely understood. Owing to its border location, the town has long-standing social, marital and commercial ties with adjoining Nepalese districts, and movement of people across the border is largely unrestricted under the open-border arrangement between India and Nepal.

Significance

Raxaul's significance derives largely from its strategic location. It is one of the principal land gateways for trade between India and Nepal, a major transit point for travellers and pilgrims heading to Kathmandu, Pokhara and Janakpur, and a logistical centre for the supply of essential goods, including fuel, into Nepal. During disruptions of the border, such as the 2015 blockade, Raxaul has frequently featured in discussions of India–Nepal relations.
