What readers should know
- SNBNCBS is focused on basic research and does not function as a conventional teaching university.
- The Integrated Ph.D. programme awards an M.Sc. degree after two years of study, currently conferred by the University of Calcutta. Earlier, this M.Sc. degree was awarded by the West Bengal University of Technology (now Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology).
- Ph.D. scholars at the centre may submit their theses to Jadavpur University, the University of Calcutta, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, or any other university that permits such submissions.
Academics and institution
As an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology, SNBNCBS concentrates on doctoral-level training and research in the basic sciences. The Ph.D. programme has been the centre's principal academic activity since its founding in 1986. The Integrated Ph.D. (M.Sc.+Ph.D.) programme launched in 2001 broadened the institute's intake by admitting students at an earlier stage, with the initial two years culminating in an M.Sc. awarded through an affiliated university.
Because SNBNCBS itself is not a degree-granting university, both the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees obtained by its students are conferred by partner universities. This arrangement gives scholars some flexibility in choosing the university to which they submit their thesis, depending on institutional norms.
