Overview
Sabarkantha is a district in the north-eastern part of the Indian state of Gujarat. The district takes its name from the Sabarmati River, which flows along its western boundary; the name literally means "the bank of the Sabarmati". The administrative headquarters of the district is located at Himatnagar. The region is known for its mix of plains, hills and forested tracts along the Aravalli range, and forms part of the cultural and economic transition zone between Gujarat and southern Rajasthan.

Geography
The district lies in the foothills of the Aravalli Range, with terrain that varies from level alluvial plains in the south and west to undulating, hilly and forested country in the north and east. The Sabarmati is the principal river, joined within or near the district by tributaries such as the Hathmati, Harnav and Vatrak. The Dharoi reservoir on the Sabarmati and the Hathmati reservoir support irrigation and drinking water supply for surrounding talukas. Forested tracts in the eastern parts include parts of the Vijaynagar–Polo region, noted for monsoon greenery and mediaeval-era ruins.
Administration
Sabarkantha is one of the districts of Gujarat administered through a District Collectorate at Himatnagar, with a District Panchayat for rural local self-government. In 2013, the district was reorganised when several eastern talukas — including Bhiloda, Modasa, Meghraj, Malpur, Dhansura and Bayad — were carved out to form the new Aravalli district. After this bifurcation, the talukas remaining in Sabarkantha include Himatnagar, Idar, Khedbrahma, Vadali, Vijaynagar, Poshina, Prantij and Talod.
History
Before Indian independence, the area now covered by Sabarkantha consisted of a large number of princely states and estates collectively known as the Sabarkantha Agency under British India, with Idar being among the most prominent states. After 1947 these states acceded to the Indian Union and were merged, initially becoming part of Bombay State. With the linguistic reorganisation of states and the creation of Gujarat on 1 May 1960, Sabarkantha became one of the districts of the new state. Subsequent administrative changes, most notably the formation of Aravalli district in 2013, have altered its boundaries.
Economy
The economy of Sabarkantha is predominantly agrarian, with cultivation of crops such as wheat, bajra, maize, cotton, castor, groundnut and vegetables. Dairy farming is a significant rural activity, and the district is associated with the Sabar Dairy, a member union of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul). Industrial activity includes ceramics and tile manufacturing around Himatnagar, marble and stone processing, agro-processing, and small and medium enterprises. The district is connected by national and state highways and by a broad-gauge railway line linking Ahmedabad with Udaipur via Himatnagar.
Demographics and culture
The population of Sabarkantha is largely Gujarati-speaking, with Hindi and tribal dialects also in use, particularly in the eastern belt. The district has a substantial tribal population, including Bhil and other Adivasi communities, especially in talukas such as Khedbrahma, Vijaynagar and Poshina. Major fairs and festivals include the Chitra-Vichitra fair held near Khedbrahma, which draws large numbers of tribal pilgrims, and various temple festivals associated with sites such as Shamlaji in the wider region.
