Background
Samantha was born on 28 April 1987 in Chennai to Joseph Prabhu, of Malayali origin, and Ninette Prabhu, of Telugu origin. She grew up in Chennai and pursued a degree in commerce at Stella Maris College. While at college she began modelling and was noticed by filmmaker Ravi Varman, which led to her introduction to director Gautham Vasudev Menon.
Career
Early years (2010–2012)
Samantha made her acting debut with Gautham Menon's bilingual romantic drama Ye Maaya Chesave (2010), opposite Naga Chaitanya, which earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut – South. The Tamil version, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, was released the same year. She followed this with Baana Kaathadi (2010) in Tamil and Brindavanam (2010) in Telugu opposite N. T. Rama Rao Jr.
Established actress (2013–2018)
Samantha consolidated her position with films such as Eega (2012) directed by S. S. Rajamouli, Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu (2013), Attarintiki Daredi (2013) and Theri (2016) in Tamil opposite Vijay. Her performance in A Aa (2016) and Mahanati (2018), where she played a journalist, drew critical praise.
Recent work (2019–present)
She received widespread acclaim for her role as Raji in the second season of the Amazon Prime Video series The Family Man (2021), her first major streaming project. The same year, she featured in the dance number "Oo Antava" in Pushpa: The Rise, which became a cultural phenomenon. Personal life and health
Samantha married actor Naga Chaitanya, son of Akkineni Nagarjuna, in October 2017 in ceremonies held in Goa. The couple announced their separation and divorce in October 2021. In 2022, she publicly disclosed that she had been diagnosed with myositis, an autoimmune condition, and has since spoken about awareness of the disease.
Other ventures
Samantha is the founder of the Pretty Plus Smart (Praaa Foundation/Pratyusha Support) charitable initiative supporting underprivileged women and children's healthcare. She has endorsed numerous brands and launched a clothing label, Saaki. In 2023 she co-founded the production house Tralala Moving Pictures.
