Geography
Samba district is bounded by Kathua district to the south-east, Udhampur district to the north, and Jammu district to the west. Its southern frontier forms part of the international boundary between India and Pakistan, with stretches of the border running along the plains of the Punjab–Jammu region. The terrain transitions from low-lying plains in the south to the Shivalik foothills in the north. The Basantar and Devak rivers, among others, drain parts of the district.
Administration
Samba was carved out as a separate district during the reorganisation of districts in Jammu and Kashmir in 2007, when the erstwhile state government created several new districts to improve administrative reach. Prior to this, the area formed part of Jammu district. The district is sub-divided into tehsils and community development blocks, and elects representatives to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
Economy and connectivity
Agriculture is a principal occupation, with wheat, paddy, maize and pulses being commonly cultivated. The district hosts the Samba Industrial Complex, part of the broader industrial belt along the Jammu–Kathua corridor. Connectivity is supported by National Highway 44 (the Jammu–Srinagar artery passing through the district) and the Jammu–Udhampur railway line, with a station at Samba.
Culture and notable places
The district is associated with several historical and religious sites, including the Purmandal temple complex on the Devak river, often referred to locally as "Chhota Kashi". Mansar Lake, a notable freshwater lake of religious and tourist significance, lies in the area on the boundary with Udhampur district. Dogri is widely spoken, alongside Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi.
Security context
Owing to its location along the international border, Samba is a sensitive sector patrolled by the Border Security Force. The district has periodically featured in reports of cross-border infiltration incidents and security operations.
