History
The town of Sambhal has a long history and is referenced in Hindu tradition, including in association with the prophesied appearance of Kalki. Under the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire, Sambhal served as an important regional centre, and it was for a brief period a seat of administration under early Mughal rulers. The town and its surroundings later became part of the Rohilkhand region under the Rohillas before being absorbed into British-administered territory.
The modern district was constituted on 28 September 2011, when the Government of Uttar Pradesh announced the creation of several new districts. It was initially known as Bhim Nagar, but was subsequently renamed Sambhal.
Economy
The economy of Sambhal district is predominantly agrarian, with sugarcane, wheat, paddy and pulses among the principal crops. Sambhal town is widely known for its handicrafts, particularly horn and bone work used to produce decorative items and components for buttons and cutlery, much of which is exported. Chandausi serves as an important grain market and trading hub.
Demographics
The population of the district is composed of both Hindu and Muslim communities, with significant Muslim representation in Sambhal town and its surrounding areas. Hindi and Urdu are widely spoken, and the local culture reflects the broader composite traditions of the Rohilkhand region.
Transport
The district is connected by road to Moradabad, Aligarh, Budaun and Bareilly. Chandausi is a notable railway junction on the Indian Railways network, providing rail links to Moradabad, Aligarh and Bareilly. The nearest major airport is at Delhi, with regional connectivity also available through Bareilly.
Significance
Sambhal district is significant for its historical associations, its role as an artisanal centre for horn and bone handicrafts, and its place within the agriculturally productive Rohilkhand belt. The town of Sambhal continues to attract scholarly and religious interest because of its multi-layered heritage spanning early historical, Sultanate and Mughal periods.
