Background and early life
Smriti Mandhana was born in Mumbai on 18 July 1996 and brought up in Sangli in western Maharashtra. Her father, Shriniwas Mandhana, and elder brother, Shravan, both played district-level cricket, and the family environment played an important part in her early exposure to the game. She began playing cricket at a young age and was selected for Maharashtra's under-15 side at the age of nine, and the under-19 team shortly afterwards. She was coached during her formative years in Sangli and progressed rapidly through state age-group cricket.
Domestic career
Mandhana has represented Maharashtra in the Senior Women's One Day and T20 tournaments organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). She first drew wide attention in October 2013 when she scored a double century in a senior women's one-day domestic match, becoming the first Indian woman to record a double hundred in a 50-over match at that level.
She has also played in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) in Australia, where she turned out for Brisbane Heat and later Hobart Hurricanes, and in The Hundred in England for Southern Brave and Oval Invincibles. In the inaugural Women's Premier League in 2023, she was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore (later Royal Challengers Bengaluru) for a then-record price and was named captain of the franchise. Under her leadership, RCB won the WPL title in the 2024 season.
International career
Debut and early years
Mandhana made her Test and One Day International debut for India in 2013 against Bangladesh, and her Twenty20 International debut in 2014. Her first Test half-century came in the Wormsley Test against England in August 2014, where she scored 51 in the second innings.
Rise as a top-order batter
She established herself as India's first-choice opener across formats during the 2016–17 cycle. At the 2017 Women's Cricket World Cup in England, she scored two consecutive fifties early in the tournament, including a 90 against England in the opening match, and helped India reach the final at Lord's, where they lost narrowly to England.
Captaincy and milestones
Mandhana has captained India in T20Is and ODIs in the absence of the regular captain. She became the first Indian woman to score a Test century overseas, registering a hundred against Australia in the day-night Test at Carrara in 2021. She has also recorded centuries in WODIs and a century in WT20Is, and has consistently featured among the world's top-ranked batters in the ICC women's rankings.

Playing style
Mandhana is known for her timing and elegant stroke play through the off side, particularly the cover drive, and for her ability to score quickly in the powerplay overs. Her left-handed presence at the top of the order has provided India with batting balance in both white-ball formats, and she is regarded as one of the country's most consistent run-getters across formats.
Significance
Mandhana's emergence in the mid-2010s coincided with a period of increased visibility and professionalisation of women's cricket in India, including the introduction of central contracts by the BCCI and the launch of the Women's Premier League in 2023. Along with peers such as Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur, Jhulan Goswami and Deepti Sharma, she has been credited with widening the audience for the women's game in India. Her record-setting WPL contract in 2023 was viewed as a landmark moment in the commercial growth of women's cricket in the country.
