Sonakshi Sinha is an Indian actress who works predominantly in Hindi cinema. Background
Sonakshi Sinha was born into a prominent film family. Her father, Shatrughan Sinha, is a veteran Hindi film actor and former Member of Parliament, while her mother, Poonam Sinha, is also a former actress. She has two elder twin brothers, Luv and Kush. She grew up in Mumbai and graduated in fashion designing from SNDT Women's University, after which she worked briefly as a costume designer for Hindi films, including the 2008 Akshay Kumar film Mera Dil Leke Dekho's wardrobe assignments and other projects, before turning to acting.
Career
Debut and early success (2010–2013)
Sinha's breakthrough came when filmmaker Abhinav Kashyap and producer Arbaaz Khan cast her opposite Salman Khan in Dabangg (2010), an action drama set in Uttar Pradesh. The film was a commercial blockbuster and earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She followed it with Rowdy Rathore (2012) opposite Akshay Kumar, Son of Sardaar (2012) with Ajay Devgn, and Dabangg 2 (2012). These films established her as a leading actress in mass-market commercial cinema.
Mainstream stardom (2013–2018)
Sinha appeared in Lootera (2013), directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and co-starring Ranveer Singh, which received critical praise for her performance as a Bengali zamindar's daughter. She continued with commercial vehicles such as Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty (2014), Action Jackson (2014), Tevar (2015), R… Rajkumar (2013) and Akira (2016), an action film directed by A. R. Murugadoss in which she played the lead. She also starred in Force 2 (2016) opposite John Abraham and Noor (2017), based on Saba Imtiaz's novel Karachi, You're Killing Me.
Recent work (2019–present)
She returned to the Dabangg franchise with Dabangg 3 (2019). She appeared in Mission Mangal (2019), an ensemble film on the ISRO Mars Orbiter Mission. Sinha has also expanded into streaming, headlining the Amazon Prime Video web series Dahaad (2023), created by Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar, in which she played a police officer investigating a serial killer in Rajasthan. She also featured in the Netflix series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (2024), directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
Other work
Sinha has performed as a playback singer, recording songs for films including Tevar and Noor. She has participated in international stage tours such as the Da-Bangg Tour with Salman Khan and other actors. She is also active in endorsements and brand campaigns and has supported causes related to body positivity and animal welfare.
Personal life
Sinha married actor Zaheer Iqbal on 23 June 2024 in Mumbai in a registered civil ceremony, followed by a reception. The wedding drew public attention as an interfaith marriage between prominent film personalities.
