Sunil Grover is an Indian actor, comedian and television personality, widely recognised for his work in Hindi comedy television. He rose to popular fame through his portrayal of the character Gutthi on Comedy Nights with Kapil and later through characters such as Dr Mashoor Gulati and Rinku Bhabhi on The Kapil Sharma Show. Beyond television comedy, he has appeared in Hindi films and web series.

Background and Early Life

Sunil Grover was born and brought up in Sirsa in the state of Haryana. He pursued higher studies at Punjabi University in Patiala, where he obtained a postgraduate degree in theatre. His training in stage performance shaped his later work in mimicry, character comedy and live performance.

Career

Radio and Early Television

Grover began his professional career in radio, working as a radio jockey before transitioning to television. He gained early visibility on the comedy show The Great Indian Comedy Show and on Hans Baliye. He also presented and acted in segments for sports broadcasts, notably featuring as the character Shakti Kapoor for cricket-related comedy programmes.

Comedy Nights with Kapil

Grover's career received a major boost with Comedy Nights with Kapil, which aired on Colors TV from 2013. His portrayal of Gutthi, a female character with an animated, childlike persona, became a popular feature of Hindi television comedy. He left the show after a period and briefly hosted his own programme, Mad in India, on Star Plus.

The Kapil Sharma Show

In 2016, Grover joined The Kapil Sharma Show on Sony Entertainment Television, where he created the widely watched character Dr Mashoor Gulati, a Punjabi doctor known for his exaggerated mannerisms, alongside Rinku Bhabhi. Following a public dispute with the show's lead Kapil Sharma in 2017, Grover departed from the programme.

Subsequent Television and Stage Work

After leaving The Kapil Sharma Show, Grover toured with stage shows and headlined the comedy programme Kanpur Wale Khuranas and later Gangs of Filmistan. He also presented Dhan Dhana Dhan, a comedy-cricket show.

Films

Grover has appeared in Hindi films in supporting and character roles, including Gabbar is Back (2015), Baaghi (2016), Pataakha (2018) directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, Bharat (2019), and Coolie No. 1 (2020).

Web Series

Grover expanded into streaming with the ZEE5 series Sunflower, a black comedy thriller in which he played the lead role of Sonu Singh. The show released its first season in 2021 and a second season in 2024. He has also featured in other digital projects, including Tandav on Amazon Prime Video.
