Background

The company traces its lineage to Tata Tea Limited, which was established in 1964 and grew to become one of the largest tea producers in the world. Tata Tea was renamed Tata Global Beverages in 2010 to reflect its broader beverages portfolio, including the Tetley business acquired in 2000. Separately, Tata Chemicals had built a branded consumer foods portfolio anchored by Tata Salt, India's first national branded iodised salt, launched in 1983, along with pulses and spices under the Tata Sampann label.

Formation

In May 2019, the Tata Group announced a scheme of arrangement to combine the consumer products business of Tata Chemicals with Tata Global Beverages. After regulatory and shareholder approvals, the merged entity was renamed Tata Consumer Products Limited and the new structure became effective in early 2020. The reorganisation brought tea, coffee, salt, pulses, spices and water businesses under one company, while Tata Chemicals retained its basic chemistry and specialty products businesses.
