Overview
Tiruvallur district (also spelt Thiruvallur) is an administrative district in the northern part of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The district headquarters is located at Tiruvallur town. The district lies adjacent to the Chennai metropolitan area on its west and north, and a significant portion of suburban Chennai falls within its boundaries, giving it both urban and rural character.

Background
The district was carved out of the erstwhile Chengalpattu MGR district (formerly Chingleput district) as part of an administrative reorganisation in Tamil Nadu. The bifurcation was intended to bring governance closer to the rapidly urbanising areas surrounding Chennai and to better manage the region's mix of agricultural, industrial, and suburban needs.
Geography
Tiruvallur district is generally flat, sloping eastwards to the Bay of Bengal. The Kosasthalaiyar river and the Araniyar drain parts of the district, and large irrigation tanks such as the Poondi reservoir (Sathyamurthy Sagar) and the Cholavaram and Red Hills (Puzhal) lakes are major sources of drinking water for Chennai. The coastal stretch includes Pulicat Lake, the second-largest brackish water lagoon in India, shared with Andhra Pradesh.
Administration
The district is divided into revenue divisions, taluks, and blocks. Major taluks include Tiruvallur, Ponneri, Gummidipoondi, Tiruttani, Pallipattu, Uthukottai, Poonamallee, Avadi, Ambattur, and Madhavaram. Several of these areas, particularly Ambattur, Avadi, Poonamallee, and Madhavaram, function as part of the Greater Chennai urban agglomeration.
Economy and industry
Tiruvallur is one of the most industrialised districts of Tamil Nadu. It hosts:
- The Heavy Vehicles Factory at Avadi, an Ordnance Factory Board / Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited unit producing main battle tanks for the Indian Army.
- The Engine Factory Avadi, manufacturing engines for armoured vehicles.
- The Ambattur Industrial Estate, one of the largest small and medium industrial clusters in South India.
- Major automobile, auto components, and engineering units in the Sriperumbudur–Oragadam–Gummidipoondi industrial corridor.
- The Ennore Port (Kamarajar Port) area and the North Chennai Thermal Power Station, located along the coast.
Agriculture, particularly paddy cultivation, fisheries along the Pulicat lagoon, and aquaculture remain important in the rural and coastal blocks.
Religion and culture
The district contains several historically significant temples. Tiruttani Murugan Temple, one of the Arupadai Veedu (six abodes of Lord Murugan), is a major pilgrimage centre. The Veera Raghava Perumal Temple at Tiruvallur town is among the 108 Divya Desams of Vaishnavism. Poondi, Tirumullaivayil, and Tirupachur are other notable religious sites.
Transport
The district is well connected by rail and road. The Chennai–Mumbai (via Arakkonam) and Chennai–Kolkata (via Gummidipoondi) trunk railway lines pass through the district. National Highway 16 (Chennai–Kolkata) and NH 716 (towards Tirupati) are important arteries. Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation and suburban rail services link the district's urban areas with the city.
Demographics
Tamil is the predominant language. The population includes substantial urban communities in the Chennai-fringe blocks and predominantly agrarian and fishing communities in the western and coastal taluks. The district has a mix of Hindu, Muslim, and Christian populations.
Recent reorganisation
Following further administrative changes in Tamil Nadu, parts of the older Tiruvallur district have been adjusted with the creation of new districts in the Chennai region, while Tiruvallur retains the northern and north-western suburbs of Chennai along with the rural and coastal hinterland.
