Background
Uttam Singh trained as a violinist and entered the Hindi film industry as an instrumentalist and arranger, working in the orchestras of established music directors during the 1960s and 1970s. He spent many years as a session musician and assistant before transitioning into independent composition. This long apprenticeship in the studios of Mumbai gave him a strong grounding in classical and folk-based film orchestration, traits that became hallmarks of his later compositions.
Career
Early work as arranger
Before becoming a credited composer, Uttam Singh worked alongside several leading music directors of Hindi cinema as an arranger and string player. He was associated with the music of films such as Shaheed Uddham Singh and contributed instrumentation to numerous productions, particularly those drawing on Punjabi folk idioms.
Independent composition
Uttam Singh gained wider recognition with the soundtrack of Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), directed by Yash Chopra and starring Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor. The album, with lyrics by Anand Bakshi, won him the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director and the National Film Award for Best Music Direction.
The same year, he composed the music for Subhash Ghai's Pardes, featuring songs such as "I Love My India" and "Yeh Dil Deewana", which became chart successes. He continued to work with Bakshi as lyricist on several subsequent projects.
Later projects
Uttam Singh composed the score for Anil Sharma's Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001), one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of its time, with songs including "Udd Ja Kaale Kanwaan" and "Main Nikla Gaddi Leke". His compositions in this period drew heavily on Punjabi folk melodies. He also worked on films such as Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (1999) and Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke (2001).
Style
Uttam Singh's compositions are characterised by a strong melodic line, prominent string arrangements reflecting his background as a violinist, and a frequent use of classical and Punjabi folk motifs. His collaborations with lyricist Anand Bakshi in the late 1990s are often cited as a continuation of the melody-driven Hindi film song tradition associated with earlier decades.
