Vikramaditya Motwane is an Indian filmmaker, screenwriter and producer associated with the contemporary independent and new-wave Hindi cinema movement. He is best known for directing Udaan (2010), Lootera (2013) and Bhavesh Joshi Superhero (2018), and for co-creating the Netflix series Sacred Games (2018), the first Indian original produced for the streaming platform. He is a co-founder of the production company Phantom Films.

Background
Motwane comes from a family with longstanding ties to the Hindi film industry; his mother, Deepa Motwane, has worked as a casting director and line producer. He began his career assisting filmmakers in Mumbai and worked as an assistant director on Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas (2002). He has cited classic Hindi cinema as well as global art-house and genre filmmakers as formative influences.
Career
Early work
After his stint with Bhansali, Motwane moved into screenwriting and second-unit work, gaining exposure to large-scale studio production. Through the 2000s he developed the script that would eventually become Udaan.
Udaan (2010)
Motwane's directorial debut Udaan, a coming-of-age drama set in Jamshedpur about an aspiring teenage writer in conflict with his authoritarian father, premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival in 2010 — the first Indian film to be selected in that section in several years. It was produced by Anurag Kashyap and UTV Spotboy and won multiple Filmfare Awards, including Best Story.
Phantom Films and Lootera
In 2011, Motwane co-founded Phantom Films with Anurag Kashyap, Madhu Mantena and Vikas Bahl. The company produced a slate of director-driven films through the 2010s. Motwane's second feature, Lootera (2013), starring Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha, was loosely adapted from O. Henry's short story The Last Leaf and set in early-1950s Bengal and Dalhousie. The film was praised for its production design, score by Amit Trivedi and restrained romantic tone.
Trapped and Bhavesh Joshi Superhero
Motwane directed Trapped (2016), a survival thriller starring Rajkummar Rao as a man stuck inside a vacant Mumbai high-rise. The minimalist production was noted for its single-location setting and lean technique. Bhavesh Joshi Superhero (2018), starring Harshvardhan Kapoor, was a vigilante drama engaging with civic activism and corruption in urban India.
Sacred Games and streaming work
In 2018, Motwane co-created and co-directed Sacred Games, Netflix's first Indian original series, adapted from Vikram Chandra's novel. He directed the Sartaj Singh storyline in Season 1 alongside Anurag Kashyap, and served as showrunner. The series, starring Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte, was widely regarded as a watershed for Indian streaming drama. Phantom Films was dissolved in 2018.
Later projects
Motwane subsequently produced and directed AK vs AK (2020), a meta-thriller for Netflix starring Anil Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap as fictionalised versions of themselves. He created and directed Jubilee (2023) for Amazon Prime Video, a period drama set in the Bombay film industry of the late 1940s and 1950s, exploring the birth of the Hindi studio system against the backdrop of Partition. He also directed CTRL (2024), a screenlife thriller for Netflix starring Ananya Panday. Through Andolan Films, his post-Phantom banner, he has produced documentaries and features, including the documentary An Insignificant Man (2016) on Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party.
Style and themes
Motwane's work is characterised by a focus on the individual struggling against institutional or familial authority, attention to period and place detail, and a willingness to move between genres — coming-of-age drama, period romance, survival thriller, vigilante film, crime saga and screenlife. Critics have noted his interest in restrained performances, location-driven realism and a tendency to subvert mainstream Hindi-film conventions.
Significance
Motwane is regarded as one of the central figures in the post-2010 wave of Hindi independent cinema that brought director-driven, mid-budget films to mainstream theatrical and streaming audiences.
