Geography
The district lies in the north-eastern part of Andhra Pradesh. It is bounded by the Bay of Bengal to the east and shares borders with neighbouring districts of Andhra Pradesh that were carved out alongside it during successive reorganisations. The terrain transitions from a coastal plain in the east to the hilly fringes of the Eastern Ghats further inland, although the bulk of the upland tribal tracts were separated into a distinct district. The coastline includes the natural harbour at Visakhapatnam, one of the principal ports of India.
Administrative reorganisation
Visakhapatnam was historically one of the largest districts of the Madras Presidency and later of Andhra Pradesh. Over time, several new districts were carved out of it, including Srikakulam and Vizianagaram. In 2022, as part of a state-wide reorganisation by the Government of Andhra Pradesh that increased the number of districts to 26, the erstwhile Visakhapatnam district was further divided. The agency (tribal) areas were constituted as the new Alluri Sitharama Raju district, while parts of the plain areas were grouped into Anakapalli district. The reduced Visakhapatnam district now centres on the urban agglomeration of Visakhapatnam city and its immediate hinterland.
Economy
The district's economy is anchored by the city of Visakhapatnam, which hosts a wide range of heavy industries and institutions, including:
- The Visakhapatnam Port, one of India's major ports.
- Hindustan Shipyard Limited, a public sector shipbuilder.
- Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited).
- The Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy.
- Refineries, fertiliser units and pharmaceutical clusters around the city.
Fisheries, along with services and information technology, also contribute significantly to the district's output.
Education and institutions
The district is home to several institutions of higher learning, including Andhra University, IIM Visakhapatnam, and GITAM, alongside medical and naval training establishments.
Culture and tourism
Notable sites in the district include the beaches along the Visakhapatnam coast such as Ramakrishna Beach and Rushikonda, the hill shrines on the Kailasagiri ridge, and the Buddhist heritage site of Thotlakonda. The district has long-standing associations with Buddhist monastic settlements dating to the early centuries of the Common Era.
Significance
Visakhapatnam district is one of the most economically important and urbanised districts of Andhra Pradesh. Following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, Visakhapatnam city assumed greater administrative significance and has been proposed at various points as a key seat of state-level governance.
