Plot
Three friends — Arjun (Hrithik Roshan), an investment banker based in London; Imran (Farhan Akhtar), a Mumbai-based copywriter; and Kabir (Abhay Deol), an engineer turned entrepreneur engaged to interior designer Natasha (Kalki Koechlin) — reunite for a three-week bachelor trip in Spain. Each chooses one adventure sport to be kept secret from the others until the moment of arrival: deep-sea diving, skydiving and the running of the bulls. Along the way, they meet Laila (Katrina Kaif), a free-spirited diving instructor, and confront personal anxieties about love, ambition, fatherhood and mortality. The journey forces each character to re-evaluate his life choices.

Production
Zoya Akhtar conceived the film as a buddy road movie set against locations she and Reema Kagti researched in Spain. The film was shot extensively across Catalonia and Andalusia, with major sequences staged at the Tomatina festival in Buñol, the San Fermín bull-running festival in Pamplona, and underwater diving sequences off the Costa Brava. Skydiving portions were filmed in Spain with specialist aerial crews. The cooperation of Spanish authorities for shooting at the festivals helped boost Indian tourist interest in the country in subsequent years.
Soundtrack
The soundtrack was composed by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy with lyrics by Javed Akhtar. Notable tracks include "Senorita" (sung by the three lead actors with Maria del Mar Fernández), "Ik Junoon (Paint It Red)", "Khaabon Ke Parindey" and "Dil Dhadakne Do". The poetry recited in the film, written by Javed Akhtar, became culturally iconic, particularly the verses "Dilon mein tum apni betaabiyan leke chal rahe ho" and "Jab bhi dard ka baadal chhayega".
Release and reception
The film released worldwide on 15 July 2011 and received widespread critical acclaim for its direction, screenplay, performances and music. It became a major commercial success in India and overseas, performing especially strongly in urban multiplexes and international markets.
Awards
At the 57th Filmfare Awards (2012), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara won seven awards, including Best Film, Best Director (Zoya Akhtar), Best Supporting Actor (Farhan Akhtar) and Best Supporting Actress (Kalki Koechlin). It also received the National Film Award for Best Choreography for the song "Senorita" (Bosco–Caesar) at the 59th National Film Awards. The film won multiple Screen, IIFA and Producers Guild awards across major categories.
Significance
The film is credited with reviving the Hindi-language road movie format and triggering a surge in Indian tourism to Spain; the Spanish tourism board reported a marked increase in Indian visitors in the years following its release. It is also regarded as a key film in establishing Zoya Akhtar as a leading director of character-driven urban Indian cinema, and for advancing nuanced portrayals of male friendship, mental well-being and emotional vulnerability in mainstream Bollywood.
