Aziz Mirza began his career in Indian television before transitioning to feature films. He is the brother of filmmaker Saeed Akhtar Mirza, a prominent figure in the parallel cinema movement. Aziz Mirza was associated with the popular television serial Circus (1989), which featured Shah Rukh Khan among its lead cast and helped launch the actor's career.
Mirza worked on Doordarshan productions during the late 1980s, contributing to serials that featured early appearances by actors who would later become stars of Hindi cinema. Circus, set against the backdrop of a travelling circus troupe, remains his most cited television work.
Mirza's feature film direction includes works that blend romance, comedy and middle-class social settings. His notable directorial credits include:
In 1999, Mirza co-founded Dreamz Unlimited with Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla. The company produced films including Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and Chalte Chalte before being restructured into Red Chillies Entertainment.
Mirza's films are noted for placing romantic narratives within everyday middle-class urban contexts rather than aspirational fantasy settings, a tendency that distinguished his work from many mainstream Hindi films of the period. His long-running creative partnership with Shah Rukh Khan contributed to the actor's image as a relatable urban romantic lead during the 1990s.
