Background

Greater Noida was developed under the Uttar Pradesh Industrial Area Development Act, 1976, with the formal constitution of the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority in the early 1990s. The city was master-planned along a grid pattern with wide arterial roads, sectoral residential pockets, dedicated industrial zones, and large institutional and educational campuses. Its layout was intended to relieve population and industrial pressure on Delhi and the older Noida township.

Geography and connectivity

The city lies between the Yamuna and Hindon rivers, on the south-eastern fringe of the NCR, adjoining Noida to the north-west and the Yamuna Expressway corridor to the south. Major connectivity links include:

  • The Noida–Greater Noida Expressway, connecting the city with Noida and Delhi.
  • The Yamuna Expressway, linking it to Agra.
  • The Eastern Peripheral Expressway, providing bypass connectivity around Delhi.
  • The Aqua Line of the Noida Metro, which connects Noida with Greater Noida.
  • Proximity to the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar.

Economy and institutions

Greater Noida hosts a mix of manufacturing, information technology, education and services. Industrial sectors accommodate automotive, electronics, garments and component manufacturing units. The city is also a significant educational hub, home to institutions such as Gautam Buddha University, Sharda University, Bennett University, the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) at Surajpur, and the Indian Institute of Management Lucknow's Noida campus, among others.

Major event and sporting venues include the India Expo Centre & Mart at Knowledge Park, which hosts large trade fairs, and the Buddh International Circuit, a Formula 1-grade motor racing track that hosted the Indian Grand Prix between 2011 and 2013.

Urban structure

The city is divided into numbered sectors, "Knowledge Parks" for educational institutions, "Techzones" and industrial sectors such as Ecotech areas, and residential pockets including Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Pi, Chi, Mu, Omega, Sigma, Zeta and Eta. Pari Chowk functions as the central commercial node of the city.

Greater Noida West

Greater Noida West, popularly referred to as Noida Extension, is a residential extension developed to the north-west of the core Greater Noida area. It comprises high-density housing sectors and is connected to Noida through the FNG (Faridabad–Noida–Ghaziabad) corridor and other arterial roads.

Significance

As one of the largest planned cities in northern India, Greater Noida plays an important role in the urbanisation of the NCR. It has become a destination for industrial investment, higher education, large-scale residential development and major events, and is closely linked to the regional growth strategy along the Yamuna Expressway and the upcoming Jewar airport.
