The serial was launched during a period when Balaji Telefilms was rapidly expanding its presence on Star Plus with family-centric dramas. It debuted shortly after Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and formed part of a slate of "K"-titled shows produced by Ekta Kapoor that came to dominate Hindi general entertainment television. The show focused on the Agarwal family and traced the life of Parvati, a daughter-in-law navigating relationships, conflicts and generational change within a large joint family.
The serial featured an ensemble cast led by Sakshi Tanwar in the role of Parvati Agarwal, the central protagonist. Kiran Karmarkar played Om Agarwal, her husband, in the early years; the role was later taken over by other actors during the show's long run. Other prominent cast members across its tenure included Apara Mehta, Kamya Punjabi, Sudha Shivpuri and Aamir Dalvi, among many supporting actors who joined and exited as the storyline progressed.
The narrative centred on Parvati, a traditional homemaker who becomes the moral anchor of the Agarwal household. The plot explored themes such as joint-family dynamics, marital relationships, intergenerational conflict, betrayal, and reconciliation. As is typical of Indian soap operas of the period, the show employed time leaps, with significant shifts in plot focus that introduced grown-up children and new family members in later seasons.
The series was directed at various points by directors associated with the Balaji Telefilms unit, with the production design, costuming, and dramatic background score becoming signature elements of Ekta Kapoor's style. Like other Balaji shows of the era, it featured high-key lighting, lavish sets depicting affluent business families, and a heavy reliance on close-up shots during emotional sequences.
Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii consistently featured among the top-rated Hindi general entertainment programmes during much of its run, contributing to Star Plus's leadership of the Hindi GEC market in the 2000s. Sakshi Tanwar's portrayal of Parvati earned widespread popularity and several industry awards, including recognition at the Indian Telly Awards and Star Parivaar Awards. The serial is often discussed alongside Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kasautii Zindagii Kay as part of the trio that shaped Indian prime-time television culture in the decade.
The show's influence is visible in subsequent family dramas that adopted its narrative structure of a virtuous central female lead at the heart of an extended joint family. It also reinforced Balaji Telefilms' commercial model of long-running daily serials with extended ensemble casts. The character of Parvati remains a frequently cited example of the archetypal "ideal bahu" trope in Indian television studies and popular discussions of the saas-bahu era.
