Sangareddy district lies in the western part of Telangana, on the Deccan Plateau. It shares borders with the state of Maharashtra to the north-west and with Karnataka to the west, making it one of the border districts of Telangana. Within Telangana, it is adjoined by Medak, Siddipet, Vikarabad and Medchal–Malkajgiri districts, and lies close to the metropolitan region of Hyderabad. The Manjira river, a tributary of the Godavari, flows through parts of the district.
The district is administered by a District Collector and is divided into several revenue divisions and mandals for administrative purposes. Sangareddy town functions as the seat of the district administration, housing the collectorate and other principal district-level offices. For policing, the district falls under a separate police commissionerate/superintendent setup as designated by the Telangana government.
The district is organised into multiple revenue divisions headquartered at towns such as Sangareddy, Narayankhed and Zaheerabad, with mandals grouped under each division.
Sangareddy district is one of the most industrialised districts in Telangana. Its proximity to Hyderabad along the Hyderabad–Mumbai national highway has led to the establishment of major industrial corridors. Important industrial concentrations include the Patancheru–Bollaram industrial belt, which hosts pharmaceutical, chemical, engineering and bulk drug units, and the industrial area around Zaheerabad. Agriculture remains significant in rural mandals, with crops such as paddy, maize, jowar, sugarcane and pulses being cultivated.
The district is home to several institutions of higher learning, most notably the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad at Kandi, established in 2008 as one of the second-generation IITs. Other institutions and research bodies are spread across the Patancheru and Sangareddy regions.
Sangareddy is well connected by road, with National Highway 65 (Pune–Hyderabad–Machilipatnam corridor) passing through the district. The district is also served by the South Central Railway, with stations on lines linking Hyderabad with Maharashtra and Karnataka. The nearest major airport is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad, Hyderabad.
The population of Sangareddy district is predominantly Telugu-speaking, with significant Urdu, Marathi, Kannada and Lambadi-speaking communities, reflecting its location at the tri-junction of Telangana, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Hindu, Muslim and Christian communities are present across the district. Local fairs, jataras and temple festivals form an important part of the cultural calendar.
The area now constituting Sangareddy district was historically part of the dominions of the Nizams of Hyderabad and, after the integration of Hyderabad State into the Indian Union in 1948, became part of Andhra Pradesh in 1956. Following the formation of Telangana on 2 June 2014, the area continued as part of Medak district until the 2016 reorganisation created the present Sangareddy district.
Sangareddy district is significant for Telangana on account of its industrial base around Patancheru and Zaheerabad, its role as a gateway between Telangana and the western Deccan states, and the presence of premier institutions such as IIT Hyderabad. Its growth is closely linked to the expansion of the Hyderabad metropolitan region.
