Shah Rukh Khan is an Indian film actor, producer, and television personality who works predominantly in Hindi cinema. Often referred to in the press as "King Khan" or the "Badshah of Bollywood," he is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Indian popular culture. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he has appeared in more than 80 Hindi films and has received numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri, awarded by the Government of India in 2005.

Shah Rukh Khan was born in New Delhi to Meer Taj Mohammed Khan, a freedom fighter from Peshawar, and Lateef Fatima, who hailed from Hyderabad. He grew up in the Rajendra Nagar neighbourhood of Delhi. He attended St. Columba's School, where he excelled in studies and sports, and later studied at Hansraj College of Delhi University, before pursuing a master's course in Mass Communication at Jamia Millia Islamia. He also trained at Barry John's Theatre Action Group in Delhi.
Khan began his acting career in the late 1980s on Indian television, gaining recognition for his roles in serials such as Fauji (1988), in which he played Commando Abhimanyu Rai, and Circus (1989). These performances established him as a promising young actor.
He made his Hindi film debut with Deewana (1992), for which he won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. In the early 1990s, he stood out for his willingness to play unconventional, anti-hero characters in films such as Baazigar (1993) and Darr (1993), at a time when such roles were considered risky for a leading man.
Khan's collaborations with directors Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar, and producers Yash Chopra and Yash Raj Films, defined a new template for the Hindi romantic film. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), directed by Aditya Chopra, became one of the longest-running films in Indian cinema history, with continuous theatrical screenings at Maratha Mandir, Mumbai. Other landmark films of the decade include Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), and Mohabbatein (2000).
In the 2000s, Khan starred in major successes such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001), Devdas (2002), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Veer-Zaara (2004), Swades (2004), Chak De! India (2007), and Om Shanti Om (2007). His film My Name Is Khan (2010), directed by Karan Johar, dealt with post-9/11 prejudices against Muslims and received wide international attention. Other commercial hits in this period included Chennai Express (2013) and Happy New Year (2014).
After a quieter spell, Khan returned to leading roles in 2023 with Pathaan, Jawan, and Dunki. Pathaan and Jawan set new commercial benchmarks at the Indian box office and were among the highest-grossing Hindi films of all time.
In 2002, Khan co-founded Red Chillies Entertainment along with Gauri Khan. The company has produced several of his own films and has expanded into visual effects (Red Chillies VFX), television, and digital content. In 2008, Khan, along with Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta, acquired the Kolkata franchise of the Indian Premier League, named Kolkata Knight Riders. The team has won the IPL title multiple times. He has also held a stake in the Caribbean Premier League franchise Trinbago Knight Riders.
Khan married Gauri Chibber, a Punjabi Hindu, in 1991, after a long courtship. They have three children: Aryan, Suhana, and AbRam. The family resides at Mannat, a bungalow in Bandstand, Bandra, Mumbai, which has become a well-known landmark.
Shah Rukh Khan is credited with shaping the global popularity of Hindi cinema, particularly across South Asia, the Middle East, parts of Africa, Central Asia, and among the South Asian diaspora in the United Kingdom, North America, and beyond. His persona—often associated with romance, the non-resident Indian (NRI) protagonist, and self-made success—has made him a cultural reference point in discussions about post-liberalisation India. He has been the subject of academic studies, biographies, and documentary films, including the Netflix documentary The Romantics (2023), which explored Yash Raj Films and his career.
Khan founded the Meer Foundation, named after his father, which supports causes including the rehabilitation of acid attack survivors. He has been associated with UNESCO and UNOPS campaigns, and was honoured by UNESCO with the Pyramide con Marni award in 2011 for his philanthropic work in support of children's education.
