Vijay Sethupathi was born on 16 January 1978 in Rajapalayam, in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu. He spent part of his early childhood in Rajapalayam before his family moved to Chennai, where he completed his schooling. He later worked in Dubai for a few years as an accountant before returning to India to pursue acting. He attended acting workshops at Koothu-P-Pattarai, the theatre group founded by Na. Muthuswamy, which shaped his approach to performance.
Sethupathi began his film career with minor and uncredited appearances in films from the late 2000s, including small roles in Lee (2007) and Kurradu. He worked as a junior artiste in several films before being noticed in Seenu Ramasamy's Thenmerku Paruvakaatru (2010) in a supporting role.
His breakthrough as a lead came with Pizza (2012), directed by Karthik Subbaraj and produced by C. V. Kumar's Thirukumaran Entertainment. The horror-thriller's commercial success established Sethupathi as a bankable performer outside the conventional star system. He followed this with Sundarapandian (2012) and Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom (2012), both of which strengthened his image as an actor willing to take on offbeat roles.
Through the mid-2010s, Sethupathi delivered a series of critically and commercially successful films, including Soodhu Kavvum (2013), Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara (2013), Pannaiyarum Padminiyum (2014), Orange Mittai (2015), Naanum Rowdy Dhaan (2015), and Iraivi (2016). His performance in Dharma Durai (2016) and the period drama Aandavan Kattalai (2016) further cemented his standing.
Sethupathi played the antagonist Bhavani in Master (2021), directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and starring Vijay, which became one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of its time. He made his Hindi film debut as the lead antagonist in Mumbaikar and appeared opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Jawan (2023), directed by Atlee. He also led the Hindi web series Farzi (2023) on Amazon Prime Video, created by Raj & DK, alongside Shahid Kapoor.
Other significant works include Vikram Vedha (2017), in which he played the titular Vedha opposite R. Madhavan; 96 (2018) opposite Trisha Krishnan; Super Deluxe (2019) directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja; Seethakaathi (2018); Maamanithan (2022); and Viduthalai Part 1 (2023) directed by Vetrimaaran.
Sethupathi launched his banner Vijay Sethupathi Productions, which has backed films including Orange Mittai, Merku Thodarchi Malai (2018), and Maamanithan. He has also written lyrics for several of his films and lent his voice as a playback singer on selected occasions.
Sethupathi is married to Jessie, and the couple have two children. The actor has spoken in interviews about the years of struggle preceding his entry into films, including his time working in Dubai. He is generally regarded as media-shy and is associated with a low-key public persona.
Vijay Sethupathi is widely credited, along with directors of the new wave such as Karthik Subbaraj, Nalan Kumarasamy, and Thiagarajan Kumararaja, with reshaping mainstream Tamil cinema in the 2010s by demonstrating that content-driven films with non-conventional leads could succeed commercially. His willingness to play negative, grey, and supporting roles even at the height of his stardom has made him a notable figure in the shift away from rigid star-vehicle conventions in South Indian cinema.
