Background and early life
David Dhawan was born in 1955 in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. He trained in film editing at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, where he was a contemporary of several future filmmakers and technicians. He began his career in the Hindi film industry in Mumbai as an editor before transitioning to direction.
Career
As an editor
Dhawan worked as an editor on several Hindi films during the late 1970s and 1980s, gaining technical familiarity with mainstream commercial cinema before moving behind the camera as a director.
As a director
Dhawan's directorial career took off in the early 1990s, when he established a distinctive style of broad, family-oriented comedy with song-and-dance sequences, slapstick humour, and ensemble casts. His most enduring on-screen partnership was with actor Govinda, with whom he made a series of hit films through the 1990s, including Aankhen (1993), Raja Babu (1994), Coolie No. 1 (1995), Saajan Chale Sasural (1996), Hero No. 1 (1997), Deewana Mastana (1997), Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998) and Haseena Maan Jaayegi (1999).
He also directed Salman Khan in films such as Biwi No. 1 (1999), Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge (2000), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004) and Partner (2007). In the 2010s and 2020s, he directed his elder son's contemporaries and his younger son Varun Dhawan in films including Main Tera Hero (2014), Judwaa 2 (2017) — a remake of his own 1997 film Judwaa — and Coolie No. 1 (2020), a remake of his 1995 hit.

Style and significance
Dhawan is identified with a particular template of 1990s Hindi comedy that prioritises mass-market entertainment over critical realism: mistaken-identity plots, double roles, exaggerated character names, broad physical comedy, and prominent music and dance. Several of his films were remakes or adaptations of South Indian hits, reworked for Hindi audiences. The Govinda–Dhawan partnership is frequently cited as one of the most commercially significant actor–director combinations in Hindi cinema during that decade.
His influence has extended into a second generation through his son Varun Dhawan, a leading Hindi film actor, and Rohit Dhawan, a director.
Personal life
David Dhawan is married to Karuna Dhawan. The couple have two sons: Rohit Dhawan, a film director, and Varun Dhawan, an actor. The family is based in Mumbai.
