Career
Debut and early work (2012–2014)
Varun made his acting debut in 2012 with Karan Johar's Student of the Year, alongside Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt. The film, produced under Dharma Productions, was a commercial success and launched all three lead actors. He followed this with Main Tera Hero (2014), directed by his father David Dhawan, and the romantic drama Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014), opposite Alia Bhatt, directed by Shashank Khaitan.
Established leading man (2015–2019)
In 2015, he appeared in Sriram Raghavan's crime drama Badlapur, which earned him critical recognition for a darker, restrained performance, and in the action-comedy ABCD 2, directed by Remo D'Souza. He continued with the ensemble comedy Dilwale (2015) directed by Rohit Shetty.
The 2017 period drama Badrinath Ki Dulhania, again with Alia Bhatt and directed by Shashank Khaitan, was among the highest-grossing Hindi films of that year. The same year, he starred in Judwaa 2, a remake of his father's 1997 film Judwaa, which was also a major box-office success. In 2018, he featured in Sharat Katariya's Sui Dhaaga: Made in India opposite Anushka Sharma, playing a tailor in small-town India.
Recent work (2020–present)
Varun appeared in Remo D'Souza's dance drama Street Dancer 3D (2020) and the period romance Kalank (2019), directed by Abhishek Varman. He featured in Coolie No. 1 (2020), directed by his father and released directly on Amazon Prime Video, a remake of the 1995 film of the same name.
Subsequent releases include the horror-comedy Bhediya (2022), directed by Amar Kaushik and part of Dinesh Vijan's Maddock horror-comedy universe, and Bawaal (2023), directed by Nitesh Tiwari and released on Amazon Prime Video. He made his web series debut with the Prime Video drama Citadel: Honey Bunny (2024), the Indian instalment of the global Citadel franchise, opposite Samantha Ruth Prabhu.

Varun married fashion designer Natasha Dalal on 24 January 2021 at Alibag, Maharashtra. The couple's first child, a daughter, was born in 2024.
Significance
Varun Dhawan is often cited as part of the generation of actors who debuted in the early 2010s and went on to anchor mainstream Hindi cinema in the latter half of the decade. He is associated with both broad family entertainers, in continuity with his father's filmography, and selective experiments in genre cinema such as Badlapur, Sui Dhaaga, and Bhediya. He is also recognised within the industry for his dance-oriented roles in films directed by Remo D'Souza.
