Overview
Konaseema district, officially Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Konaseema district, is a district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It was carved out of the erstwhile East Godavari district as part of a reorganisation of districts in Andhra Pradesh that came into effect on 4 April 2022, increasing the number of districts in the state from 13 to 26. The district takes its name from the Konaseema region, the fertile delta formed by the distributaries of the Godavari river before it meets the Bay of Bengal.

Geography
The district lies in the Godavari delta on the eastern coast of Andhra Pradesh. It is bounded by the Bay of Bengal to the east and south, and by Kakinada district, East Godavari district, Eluru district and West Godavari district along its other margins. The terrain is largely flat alluvial plain, with a dense network of canals and distributaries of the Godavari, including the Vainateyam, Vasishta, Gautami and their branches. The coastline includes mangrove tracts associated with the Coringa ecosystem, and the deltaic landscape supports paddy cultivation, coconut groves and aquaculture.
Climate and environment
The region experiences a tropical climate with hot summers, a southwest monsoon between June and September, and a significant northeast monsoon contribution from October to December. The district is periodically affected by cyclones and storm surges originating in the Bay of Bengal.
Administration
The administrative headquarters of the district is located at Amalapuram, which is also a major commercial centre of the Konaseema region. The district is administered by a District Collector and Magistrate, with a Superintendent of Police heading the law and order setup. For revenue administration the district is divided into revenue divisions and mandals, and for local self-government it includes municipalities, nagar panchayats and gram panchayats.

Economy
The economy of Konaseema district is predominantly agrarian. Paddy is the principal crop, supported by the extensive irrigation provided by the Godavari delta system anchored by the Dowleswaram Barrage upstream. Coconut cultivation is a defining feature of the Konaseema landscape, and the region is among the leading coconut-producing tracts in Andhra Pradesh. Other significant activities include aquaculture (particularly shrimp and fish farming), dairying, sugarcane, banana and horticulture. Small and medium enterprises in rice milling, coir, and food processing are spread across the district.
Demographics and culture
Telugu is the principal language spoken in the district. The Konaseema region is known in Andhra Pradesh for its lush green scenery, backwaters and traditional Godavari cuisine, and is sometimes promoted as the "God's own creation" of the Godavari delta in state tourism material. Festivals such as Sankranti, Vinayaka Chavithi and the temple festivals along the Godavari are widely observed.
Background and naming
On 4 April 2022, the Government of Andhra Pradesh notified the formation of new districts so that each Lok Sabha parliamentary constituency in the state corresponded broadly to a district. Konaseema district was one of the new districts created on that day, drawn from parts of the erstwhile East Godavari district. The district was subsequently renamed in honour of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Constitution of India.
Timeline
- Pre-2022: The Konaseema region forms the southern delta portion of the undivided East Godavari district.
- 4 April 2022: Konaseema district is constituted as a separate district with headquarters at Amalapuram.
- 2022: The district is officially renamed Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Konaseema district.
Significance
The creation of Konaseema district brought administration closer to the deltaic mandals that had earlier been distant from the East Godavari district headquarters at Kakinada. It also gave a distinct administrative identity to the Konaseema cultural and agricultural region, which has long been recognised as one of the most productive tracts of the Godavari delta.
