History

The town derives its name from Sayyid Muzaffar Khan, a noble of the late Mughal period, after whom the settlement was named. The surrounding region historically formed part of the territories administered under the Mughal Empire and later came under the influence of the Marathas before passing to the British East India Company in the early nineteenth century.

Muzaffarnagar district was constituted as a separate administrative unit during British rule. The area was active during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, with local zamindars and cultivators participating in the uprising. After independence, Muzaffarnagar continued as a district headquarters in Uttar Pradesh.

Other significant industries include paper and pulp, steel rolling, and the manufacture of agricultural implements. Sugarcane, wheat and rice dominate the agricultural economy, supported by intensive canal and tubewell irrigation.
