Background

Neeraj Pandey began his career in the television and advertising space before moving into feature films. Prior to his directorial debut, he worked on documentaries and corporate films, which shaped his preference for tightly plotted, dialogue-driven narratives with realistic settings.

Career

Directorial debut

A Wednesday! (2008), starring Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher, was Pandey's first feature film. The thriller, set within a single afternoon in Mumbai, dealt with terrorism and the response of the state. It received critical acclaim and won him the National Film Award for Best Debut Film of a Director. The film was later remade in Tamil as Unnaipol Oruvan (2009) and in Telugu as Eenadu (2009), both starring Kamal Haasan.

Special 26 and Baby

Special 26 (2013), inspired by a real-life heist incident from 1987, starred Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher, Manoj Bajpayee and Jimmy Sheirgill. The film was a commercial and critical success and consolidated Pandey's reputation for genre filmmaking.

Baby (2015), an espionage thriller again starring Akshay Kumar, focused on a covert counter-terrorism unit. It led to a prequel, Naam Shabana (2017), starring Taapsee Pannu, which Pandey wrote and produced; it was directed by Shivam Nair.

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story

In 2016 Pandey directed M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, a biographical film on the Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The film starred Sushant Singh Rajput in the title role and was among the highest-grossing Hindi films of that year.

Later work

Pandey directed Aiyaary (2018), a thriller starring Manoj Bajpayee and Sidharth Malhotra dealing with corruption in defence procurement. He returned to the heist genre with Special Ops (2020), a web series for Disney+ Hotstar starring Kay Kay Menon, which became one of the breakout Indian streaming titles of its time and led to follow-up seasons. He has also produced and developed several films and series, including Rustom (2016), Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017, co-produced) and the streaming series Khakee: The Bihar Chapter (2022) for Netflix. He directed Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha (2024), starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu.

Production companies

Pandey co-founded Friday Filmworks, under which most of his directorial projects have been produced. He is also associated with Plan C Studios, which has produced several of his streaming projects, and Shital Bhatia has been a long-standing producing partner.

Style and themes

Pandey's filmography is marked by recurring engagement with the Indian state apparatus — intelligence agencies, the police, the armed forces and the bureaucracy. His films typically feature ensemble casts, procedural detail, and twists rooted in plot construction rather than visual spectacle. He frequently collaborates with actors such as Akshay Kumar, Manoj Bajpayee, Anupam Kher and Jimmy Sheirgill.
