Background

The college was established by the R.M.K. Group, an educational trust set up by R. S. Munirathinam, who is also associated with the founding of related institutions including R.M.D. Engineering College and R.M.K. College of Engineering and Technology. The group's institutions are clustered in and around Kavaraipettai, a township on the northern fringe of the Chennai metropolitan region.

Academics

RMKEC offers Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programmes across disciplines such as Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Information Technology, and Biomedical Engineering. The college also offers postgraduate programmes (M.E./M.Tech.) in selected branches and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme. Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes are made through the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) counselling process based on Class XII marks.

The institution has been granted autonomous status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in association with Anna University, allowing it to design its own curriculum within the broader framework of the affiliating university. Several of its undergraduate programmes have received accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), and the college has received accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

Campus

The campus is situated along the Chennai–Tirupati highway (NH 16 corridor) at Kavaraipettai, roughly between Chennai and Gummidipoondi. Facilities on campus include departmental laboratories, a central library, hostels for men and women, sports grounds, and an auditorium. The college operates transport services connecting the campus with locations across the Chennai region.

Student activities

Students participate in technical symposia, departmental associations, and chapters of professional bodies such as the IEEE, ISTE, CSI, and SAE India. The college conducts an annual technical festival and a cultural festival, and runs units of the National Service Scheme (NSS) and other social outreach programmes.

Significance

RMKEC is one of the larger self-financing engineering colleges in northern Tamil Nadu and forms part of an educational cluster that has contributed to the growth of Kavaraipettai as a student township. Its proximity to industrial belts at Gummidipoondi and Sriperumbudur, as well as to the IT corridor of Chennai, has supported industry interaction and campus recruitment activity.
