Gautam Buddha University (GBU) is a state public university located in Greater Noida, in the Gautam Buddha Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, India. Established by the Government of Uttar Pradesh, the university focuses on multidisciplinary education and research, with academic programmes spanning engineering, management, biotechnology, Buddhist studies, humanities, and the social sciences.

The university was conceptualised as part of the development of Greater Noida under the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA), with the aim of creating a large, residential, research-oriented institution in western Uttar Pradesh. It was constituted under the Gautam Buddha University Act, 2002 enacted by the Uttar Pradesh State Legislature. The campus was developed on a substantial tract of land allotted by GNIDA in Greater Noida, in the National Capital Region (NCR).
The institution draws its name and identity from Gautam Buddha, and accordingly hosts a dedicated School of Buddhist Studies and Civilization alongside its mainstream professional schools. The campus design incorporates Buddhist architectural motifs, including a central meditation centre.

Admission to most programmes is conducted through national-level entrance examinations and the university's own admission tests. The medium of instruction is primarily English.
The GBU campus is a large residential campus in Greater Noida, with academic blocks, hostels for students, faculty housing, sports facilities, a central library, and a Buddha statue and meditation hall that serve as a focal point of the campus. Its location places it within the Delhi NCR and close to the Yamuna Expressway corridor.
As a state university, GBU is governed under the provisions of its enabling Act, with the Governor of Uttar Pradesh serving as the Visitor. The Vice-Chancellor heads the academic and administrative functions, supported by statutory bodies such as the Executive Council and Academic Council.
Gautam Buddha University is one of the principal state universities serving the western Uttar Pradesh and NCR region. Its combination of professional and technical schools with a dedicated centre for Buddhist studies gives it a distinct identity among Indian state universities, and it contributes to higher education access in the rapidly urbanising Greater Noida area.
