Kapil Sharma rose to nationwide popularity through Comedy Circus and the talent show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, before launching Comedy Nights with Kapil on Colors TV in 2013. He subsequently moved to Sony Entertainment Television with The Kapil Sharma Show, which ran in multiple seasons from 2016. Following the conclusion of that programme, Sharma signed with Netflix to develop a new format that combined his familiar mix of celebrity interviews, sketch comedy, and ensemble humour, distributed weekly on streaming rather than broadcast television.
Each episode features Kapil Sharma as host, accompanied by a recurring ensemble of comedians who play exaggerated comic characters and interact with celebrity guests. Episodes typically include opening monologues, character-driven sketches, audience interaction, musical interludes, and a celebrity interview segment. Guests have included actors, sportspersons, and musicians, with episodes often timed to coincide with the promotion of films or other projects.
The reunion of Kapil Sharma and Sunil Grover, who had previously worked together on Comedy Nights with Kapil and The Kapil Sharma Show before a public falling-out in 2017, was widely noted as a highlight of the new series.
The show premiered on Netflix on 30 March 2024, with episodes released weekly. New episodes typically debuted on Saturdays. A second season was announced and rolled out subsequently, continuing the weekly release model.
The series attracted significant viewership upon launch, appearing on Netflix India's most-watched lists in the weeks after release. Critics noted the show's emphasis on lighter, family-oriented humour consistent with Sharma's previous television work, and the chemistry of the returning ensemble cast. Reviews were mixed on the format's freshness, with some commentators observing that the streaming version retained much of the structure of the earlier television show.
The programme is among the more prominent unscripted Hindi-language commissions on Netflix in India and represents a continued shift of mainstream Indian comedy talent from linear television to streaming platforms. It also extended Kapil Sharma's long-running celebrity interview format into the over-the-top (OTT) space, where it competes with podcasts, YouTube chat shows, and other streaming variety formats.
